I have not shopped at Metro for quite some time but they managed to bring me back by mailing me personalized Air Miles coupons. I know some people are against the tracking of personal spending habits by using loyalty cards but I honestly don’t care. Unless you spend cash, your purchases can be tracked through your credit/debit card anyway so why not take advantage of the rewards?
I’ve compared coupons with my friends’ and they are specifically tailored to the individual. I used only three coupons, with the total value adding up to 51 bonus Air Miles. They were:
- 40 miles with $80 purchase
- 5 miles with a $5 fresh meat purchase
- 6 miles with a Lactantia milk purchase
The Lactantia Pur Filtre milk is only $3.99/4L this week (the cheapest price for milk in Ontario) and I also used a $1 off coupon that I got from a specially marked package of Black Diamond Cheestrings.
Metro and Food Basics made a change to their cash register systems this year, which was driving me crazy because you can’t see the discounted price when the item is scanned. In order to see the “promotion price”, you have to ask the cashier to subtotal the bill partway through or else you have to wait until the final tally. I’ve been annoyed by this because I always try to spot discrepancies while being checked out so that I can quote the Scanning Code of Practice to receive free groceries. However, the new system worked in my favour in terms of claiming the bonus Air Miles. I was able to claim the 40 miles on an $80 purchase, even though I didn’t actually spend $80. For example, the milk was scanned at over $7 and the coupon was applied on the original price, not the sale price.
Total spent: $61
Regular Air Miles Earned: 3
Bonus Air Miles Earned: 56
Air Miles Earned from American Express Platinum Card (1/$10): 6
65 Air Miles earned on one purchase is a record for me, topping my previous achievement of 51 miles!
