Happy Diwali 2013!

November 3, 2013 by Fay 3 Comments

For those of you who don’t already know, Diwali is a holiday that is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains around the world.  What amused me when I first heard about Diwali is that it is known as the “Festival of Lights”, which is also what the Jewish holiday Hannukah is called.  I’ve learned a lot about world religions and cultures without ever doing research or travelling to foreign destinations.  All I need to do is interact with people around me, in my community or at work.  This is one of the joys and freedom of living in a multicultural country like Canada.

Diwali-themed Quality Street chocolate tins

Diwali-themed Quality Street signage and chocolate tins at a grocery store in Toronto, Canada.

Recently, I was impressed to see a large Diwali-themed display of Quality Street chocolates (a renowned British treat) at a local grocery store.  Over the years, I’ve discovered that religions and cultures may observe different holidays, but they all end the same way:  Eating and partying with family and friends.  Happy Diwali if you’re celebrating and remember to exercise caution with fireworks!

Sorry Yves-Marie, I do not have a Diwali tin. Maybe one of my readers will have one. I did not see a special tin in 2014. This post was written in 2013.
