Living the high life, at the lowest price

Sour grapes

No one ever said marriage would be easy.  Marriage between a spender and a saver is even more challenging.  And marriage between a spender and a cheapo…yikes.  But in any case, it’s all about compromise.

What is the value of your marriage?  I can’t tell you the exact price of mine, but it’s definitely worth more than $2.25.  My dear husband (DH) and I went grocery shopping yesterday.  Normally, I stand in front of the cashier, watching the prices on the screen of the cash register as the items are being scanned.  Yesterday, I forgot my wallet and we switched positions.  I finished loading up the shopping cart and DH paid the bill.  A normal person would have put the groceries in the car and carried on as usual.  But no, a cheapo like me can’t do something that simple.  As I pushed the cart through the parking lot, I snatched the receipt out of his hands to see how much the bill was.  I let out a yelp when I saw the price of the red grapes.  We had been charged for red seedless grapes at $4.39/kg instead of red globe grapes at $2.18/kg.  My first instinct was to turn around and demand a refund of the difference.  However, the time was 5:45 pm and we would have been late picking up the kids.  The refund would have been less than the cost of the late fee.  After hurling some obscenities at my poor husband,  I decided that no one would eat any grapes until I could get them reweighed for a refund.  How ridiculous does that sound?  Yes, I really said that!  This morning, still refusing to let the issue die, I packed up the bunch of grapes and put them in the car.  By this afternoon, I relented and let my poor hubby off the hook.  Forcing him to go back to the store just seemed low on the priority list and bordered on harassment.  I felt a bit hypocritical because I’m all about saving every dollar possible but a good marriage is priceless.

Many times you can just call and explain to the manager of their error and ask if you can bring in your receipt on your next trip in. I did that with Sam’s Club here in the U.S. They charged me twice for a piece of pork. I just wrote his name and our conversation with the date and time and in the next week I returned I got my refund. Makes no (financial) cents…errr…sense to waste your gas and time on a couple dollars when you can just fix it the next time you are there to shop! Just an idea of what I do in that situation. Take care!

That’s a great idea, Martilyo! I’ll have to remember that for next time. I hate wasting my money due to errors.

I’ve been in a similar situation – although I ripped my husband to pieces when he returned from a shopping trip with a bunch of grapes for $11.38 (at $5.99/lb). Who buys grapes when they’re $5.99 a pound??? I vowed to make him return them, but like you, didn’t seem like much of a priority the next day. On a side note, they were the best grapes I’ve ever had, so *perhaps* they may have been worth it. Great post!

Hahaha! These poor men, they get in trouble for not helping out and then we still rip them to shreds when they buy the wrong thing! Thanks for sharing.

Thats so true. I’ve bought grapes before and then looked at the receipt. Talk about sticker shock. I then thought “does that price include someone coming to my house, washing the grapes and then feeding them to me?

If you actually looked at the receipt, then I hope you destroyed it before your wife saw the price!
