I’ve been busy these past two weeks with writing, holiday preparations and work. I am fortunate to have the opportunity to contribute to society while on the job, and I recently accepted the challenge of coordinating the “Red Nose” campaign fundraising efforts in my building. With the assistance of a co-worker, we sold flashing red noses for $3 each. I bought reindeer antlers from the dollar store and we wore them along with the nose to sell our wares.
How could anyone say no to this red-nosed reindeer?
All the proceeds from this campaign will benefit the Hope in Action Emergency Fund, which is administered by the Toronto Foundation for Student Success (TFSS). This fund allows staff in Toronto public schools to apply for an emergency grant on behalf of a student. This could include the need for shoes, homework supplies or backpacks. However, at this time of year, there are many children whose families cannot afford to give them proper winter clothes, hats and mittens. These student grants are made possible through fundraising or with the help of donors. If there’s no money in the fund, no grants can be made. The TFSS also supports breakfast, lunch and snack programs for students who face the challenge of hunger. I’m not talking about starving children in Africa. These are children who could be living in your neighbourhood and go to your child’s school. I am fortunate that neither my children nor myself has ever experienced cold or hunger. As a parent, it absolutely breaks my heart to think about children who are suffering.
There is no donation that is too small for a charitable organization. My building raised a total of $468, proving that if enough people donate even a few dollars, a difference can be made.
