Plastic bags will not be banned in the City of Toronto after all.
The decision was made yesterday after the city solicitor provided some confidential advice to City Council. I suppose the legal team made it clear that the city would probably lose the legal challenges presented by the Ontario Convenience Stores Association and the Canadian Plastics Industry Association, two groups that most of the general public hadn’t even heard of prior to the proposed bag ban.
If bags are re-used and then recycled, they are not an environment hazard. A big shoutout goes to Reverse the Bag Ban, a group who has worked hard to dispel the myths of the plastic bag. Check out their website for more interesting facts.
